Oakleigh Park
OAKLEIGH
Park. Home of the Kookas. Rival South Coast Clubs hate coming here to face the
Kookas, because they know it spells impending doom.
All
senior and junior sides use Oakleigh Park for training, while our first and
second grade sides are lucky to call the ground their home for competition
matches.
Our
junior and third and fourth grade sides use 'The House of Pain', King Memorial
Park and the newly-renovated Jock Brown Oval as their homes for competition games.
The
facilities at Oakleigh Park are top notch, including three practice nets and the
yet-to-be-named grandstand, which seats at least 50.
This
work is thanks to father and son curator team, Harry and Mark Honeysett, who are
both Life Members of the Kookas.
Oakleigh Park
hosts more than cricket matches - the Illawarra Academy of Sport uses the venue
for training every month and the Kookas' annual Christmas party is also held at
the ground.
The
dressing rooms at Oakleigh Park are home sweet home for the Kookas’ first and
second grade sides since 1982 – and they have been made all the more sweeter
thanks to a new paint job by club legend Mark Honeysett.
In 2004-05,
Honeysett, a sign writer by trade, took up roller and paintbrush to give the
Kookas’ nest a new look.
The
result is a brilliant dark maroon paint job that has drawn rave reviews from all
the Kookas who have seen it.
Honeysett
has also hung a sign from the wall next to the dressing room’s exit featuring
the slogan ‘Never, never, never give up’ in bold white print and the head of
the Kookas’ mascot.
